Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter

One of my favorite childhood breakfasts was a sandwich dripping with a sweet tahini butter- a decadent spread made out of sesame paste and sugar. Similar to Halva, a traditional Middle Eastern treat, it has a rich history and is known for its health benefits. Halva is made primarily from sesame paste, also known as tahini, and sugar. This simple yet indulgent combination has been enjoyed for centuries, offering both a delightful taste and a nutritional boost.

Egyptian halva is made with sesame paste tahini and sugar, and you could eat a ton of it in one sitting and still long for more. The version I made here is more of a spread, made with honey, and its texture is a bit thicker than traditional tahini butter (but it’s equally as decadent). Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter is a deliciously simple and nutritious spread that combines the creamy richness of tahini with the natural sweetness of honey or maple syrup. This easy-to-make recipe adds a touch of sweetness to your meals, making it perfect for breakfast, snacks, or even dessert.

Health Benefits of Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter

This recipe includes several healthy ingredients, each providing unique health benefits:

  • Tahini: Made from sesame seeds, tahini is rich in healthy fats, protein, and essential minerals like magnesium, iron, and calcium. It supports heart health, bone health, and provides a good source of antioxidants.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural sweetener that offers antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It’s also known for its soothing effects on the throat and its ability to provide a quick energy boost.
  • Maple Syrup (if used): Maple syrup is another natural sweetener, rich in antioxidants and minerals such as zinc and manganese, which support immune health and energy production.

Combining these ingredients not only enhances the flavor of the spread but also packs a nutritious punch, making it a healthier alternative to many commercial spreads.

How to Make Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter

To make this delectable spread, follow these simple steps:

  1. Heat the Honey: In a small saucepan, heat 1/2 cup of honey over medium heat until it starts to bubble gently. Be careful not to overheat it to avoid burning.
  2. Add the Tahini: Once the honey is bubbling, immediately add 1/2 cup of tahini to the saucepan. Stir well to combine, creating a smooth, homogeneous mixture.
  3. Optional Additions: If desired, add any extra ingredients such as a pinch of sea salt, a dash of vanilla extract, or some finely chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
  4. Refrigerate: Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or airtight container. Refrigerate for a couple of hours until the spread thickens and sets.

Tips for Making the Best Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter

Here are some tips to ensure your Sweet Tahini & Honey Butter turns out perfectly:

  • Use High-Quality Ingredients: The quality of tahini and honey or maple syrup will greatly affect the taste of your spread. Opt for organic, pure ingredients for the best flavor.
  • Monitor the Heat: When heating the honey, make sure it doesn’t boil vigorously, as this can cause it to burn. Gentle bubbling is ideal.
  • Experiment with Add-Ins: Feel free to get creative with optional additions. Try adding cinnamon, cardamom, or cocoa powder for different flavor profiles. Nuts, seeds, or dried fruit can also add interesting textures.
  • Store Properly: Keep the spread in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for several weeks, but make sure to stir it before each use if it separates.
